In a world of rapidly changing technology, and with an upsurge of interest in hybrid systems, most AI practitioners realise that they have much to learn from techniques outside their own speciality, and need a broad overview of other AI and computing techniques.
Recognising this, SGAI has entered into a closer co-operation with the Natural Computing Applications Forum, whose expertise in technologies such as neural networks, genetic algorithms and artificial life complements SGAI's established emphasis on knowledge based systems, case based reasoning and knowledge management.
NCAF is an independent, non-profit making organisation which offers AI practitioners the opportunity to meet and share their expertise in a friendly environment. The Forum organises three two-day meetings each year, in addition to providing a Newsletter and an International Journal.
NCAF meetings typically include a themed first day, with a workshop and papers and presentations on the chosen theme, followed by a day of general papers and discussions. Ample time is allowed in the programme for informal discussions, and the chance to make new contacts and renew old acquaintances. NCAF have agreed reduced rates for SGAI members attending NCAF meetings. At £60, the two day meetings offer excellent value for money for those wanting to improve their knowledge of natural computing technologies. In return NCAF members will be able to attend SGAI conferences and events at reduced rates.
In the future we plan to extend the cooperation between the groups, with joint events and other activities aimed at promoting the exchange of ideas and knowledge between the groups' members. Richard Ellis, who sits on both the SGAI and NCAF committee, acts as a link to promote closer co-operation between the groups. He will be pleased to answer any questions or discuss proposals for further co-operation between these two well established professional groups.
