SGAI, the British Computer Society Specialist Group on Artificial Intelligence was founded in June 1980.
The group's original name was SGES, which reflected its early
focus on rule-based Expert Systems. However the group's scope expanded rapidly
after its foundation and it now covers all areas of Artificial Intelligence.
SGAI has played a valuable role in the development of these fields in Britain
over the last 20 years.
The group has organised an annual international conference since 1981. It has
been a member of ECCAI, the
European Co-ordinating Committee for Artificial Intelligence
since 1992.
A substantial proportion of the Group's membership is from industry. It provides
a valuable forum in which the academic and industrial AI communities can meet.
